Chance and Randomness in creativity:
Experiments in how random & chance-based interventions can free up the creative process and lead to new avenues of expression.

by ViNNi KiNiKi & Amit Rai Sharma

A talk by two artists share their approach and discuss how embracing chance and randomness has freed them from their own limitation in creativity.

About the talk

Have you ever felt exhausted by your own creativity, or frustrated by your own process? Are you always reaching for the same tools and relying on the same tricks and techniques?

ViNNi KiNiKi & Amit Rai Sharma started making electronic music together guided by one idea - what if every creative decision was taken out of their hands? What if they didn’t have to think about making any decisions at all?

Together they set about experimenting with interventions, creating the wildest rules they could think of, and then using these rules to determine everything about the piece they were about to make, from the time signature to the speed of the piece to even what instruments they had to use. Their tools of choice became dice, cards, and coins; the three sages to confer with prior to making executive decisions.

In 2020 they released their first EP. 3 tracks of music created entirely from this system of chance-driven decision making. Since then they have been developing programs and shareable approaches in the form of musical games.

In this talk, ViNNi & Amit will share their approach and discuss how embracing chance and randomness has freed them from their own limitations, changed the way they think about creativity, and impacted their own approach to music making.

This talk will involve audience participation and will be subject to random interventions, and regardless of what happens, by the end of the talk, everyone should feel a little bit braver about using chance and randomness to shake up the more monotonous parts of their practice.

About the speakers

ViNNi KiNiKi is a British-born Polish graffiti and digital artist, based between London and Bangkok.

Amit Rai Sharma is a British-born Indian practicing sound artist, based in London.

Together they make music under the moniker ‘Łoł’ (pronounced ‘whoa’), using chance-based decision-based actions, including but not limited to; playing dice, cards, coins, self-created randomizing apps, Wikipedia articles, random google searches and word counts.

Their first release ‘The Fall of Ahmed’ (2022) was released through ‘Khao Records’, and independent label based in Australia, and is available via Spotify, Bandcamp, Youtube, and Apple Music.

During the pandemic they worked on and sold a number of collaborative pieces in the NFT art space and are currently working on an as-yet-untitled new record, to be finished by the end of 2022.
